Putative Roles of SOCS1: SOCS 3 Ratios in Development and Resolution of a Herpesvirus Lesion

Nancy J Bigley

This article is the author’s opinion of the effects of the cytokines produced as a result of epithelial cell macrophage interactions during herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1) infection. Cell cultures of murine keratinocytes were examined for SOCS1 production following HSV-1 infection and macrophage cell lines were examined for cytokine production following polarization and modification of cytokine production by peptide mimetics of suppressors of the cytokine signaling (SOCS) molecules SOCS1 and SOCS3. It is speculated that the pro inflammatory cytokines produced by M1 polarized cells enhance the inflammatory nature of the lesion produced by HSV-1 and the anti-inflammatory cytokines of the M2 polarized cells promote resolution of the lesion.
